>> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald good afternoon, everybody. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. a lot of questions for that surviving suspect in the boston marathon bombings. did the brothers act alone? are they part of a terrorist network? and we're now hearing from the mother of the two men who cbs reporter randall pinkston says is speaking in their defense.

>> reporter: several streets around the boston marathon bombings site are re-op residents and businesses today's. sources tell cbs news 19-year- old marathon bombing suspect johar tsarnaev is telling investigators his older brother's radical views drove the attacks and that they were not connected to a terrorist organization. due to a gunshot injury to his throat he is only able to speak one word at a time and has been communicating with interrogators mostly in writing. in a new interview from russia today, the suspect's mother says her sons would never be involved in a terror attack. >> what happened is a terrible thing. but i know that my kids have nothing to do with this. >> reporter: the official number of injured from the bombings has jumped from an initial estimate of 170 to more than 280. boston public health officials say that's because people have been going to hospitals with injuries they did not seek treatment for the day of the bombings. sean collier the m.i.t. allegedly assassinated wil

19. the boston bombings apparentlyinvolving legal immigrants is now a factor if the debate over reforming immigration laws. today homeland security secretary janet napolitano told the senate panel she supports proposals by a bipartisan group of 8 senators. she said the provisions to identify 11 million illegal immigrants currently in the country would help improve security. >> knowing who they are is critical to public safety. indeed, as we just saw in boston, information from our legal immigration system often supports response and investigation. >> the secretary says the proposed bill would improve on systems already in place like database tracks and fingerprinting but some republican senators say reforms should be halted and revamped to make national security a high priority. two suspected terrorists were in court today for a bail hearing in canada. authorities say two men were scheming to derail a passenger train in the toronto area.

the suspects are foreign nationals who lived in canada. we have learned that one of them had been living in canada for some 20 years. officials say they were in the planning phase and were getting outside help. the two suspects have been under surveillance for re thar. at this time, officials do not believe though this plot was linked in any way to the boston bombings. a bill designed to take guns away from some californians has now gone to the governor. state lawmakers approved the plan to take more than 40,000 illegally owned guns off the street providing $24 million to a program that takes guns from felons and the mentally ill. supervisors in contra costa county are considering a budget that could close more fire stations. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran tells us the lack of fire funding is as a result of a measure voters failed to pass. >> the impact is going to be tremendous i think to this area. >> reporter: a new budget was put on the table at this morning's board of supervisors meeting. and two more contra costa county fire stations were put on the chopping block. >> i know they have to cut, but

i can't imagine in the new budget cutting two more fire stations. it would devastate this area. >> this is our fire seas ey have their own re but dert case of something that really worse, all the stations have to help. what happens to the people here if something happens? it's a concern. >> reporter: last years the board decided to close -- last year, the board decided to close four stations including six engine companies after residents failed to pass a $75 a year parcel tax. unfortunately, last year's reality is the same today. there is no money. >> it's very difficult. and we recognize that our citizenry wants fire protection services and we are going to have to figure how to do this. >> reporter: the firefighters say the other reality is these cuts could be life or death. >> our firefighter staffing went from 91 firefighters down to 72. and these cuts would bring us down to 66 firefighters on duty. in a county this size, it's unheard of. >> rert: e plan so far is

to close one station july and another next year. supervisor mitchoff says she is optimistic they can find other options but dipping into the general fund might not be one of them. >> i know there is a feeling we are going to be ask to use general fund dollars and at this point, i have to weigh that against other needs in the county. >> reporter: today the budget was just up for generalization. the board of supervisors will make a final decision on it on may 14. in martinez, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> and cate tells us that she has learned that station 87 in pittsburg could be one of the stations forced to close. an urgent appeal for more donations from an east bay charity. meals on wheels of contra costa county could drop 200 seniors. it's a drastic measure brought on by several factors including a gradual increase in need in the community when the recession hit plus the sudden loss of $100,000 because of the federal budget cuts. 1200 seniors currently get home

>> got a good crew there, lawrence. an eight-hour standoff involving the oakland s.w.a.t. team ended this morning with no suspect being found. gardens apartments at 65th avenue. there loing for a man they say shot another person in officers searched the suspect's apartment finally found nothing. the california highway patrol are will continue patrols in oakland. the details are still being worked out. but the chp might expand its patrols in oakland from two days a week to four. oakland is also working on a new contract with the alameda county sheriff's department to keep deputies in oakland twice a week. bicyclists, pedestrians will have to wait a couple more years before they can go all the way across the new eastern span of the new bay bridge. caltrans won't be able to finish the bike lane and the pedestrian path until the old bridge is demolished. that's expected to be sometime in 2015. until then, bike path will stop about two-thirds of the way from oakland to yerba buena island. a bogus tweet about the white house shows us just how

press' tweet about a white e attack. posted this hacksers are blamed for an "associated press" tweet about a white house attack. the tweet posted this morning reads, breaking, two explosions in the white house and barack obama is injured. white house spokesman jay carney told reporters soon after the bogus tweet that the president was fine. the ap confirmed that its twitter account had been suspended following the hack while it works to correct the issue. the dow actually turned negative after the twitter

wind? re lcauses wind. between >> the greater the difference between a big ridge of high pressure and area of low pressure, that's where you get those strong gusty winds. and we have seen some breezes around the bay area. it's nice to get a breeze on a day like today, lots of sunshine but temperatures are heating up. we have fog on the coastline and then the temperatures starting to cool off actually into san francisco after shooting up to 72 degrees. now they are back down into the 60s. but all around the bay area, the temperatures running up again. warm inland as temperatures soar under high pressure and offshore winds. low clouds and fog along the coastline and a sea breeze kicking in. we'll see more of that with gradual cooling over the next few days starting today. how about those high temperatures outside. we are looking at 80s towards san jose into santa clara valley. i think in the east bay, we'll

temperatures running up in many spots again maybe some mid-80s this afternoon in places like concord here and then as you make your way inside the bay, we'll see those temperatures running generally cooler but not bad at all. if you plan to go to the giants game tonight, it should be a good game. mostly clear, mild temperatures, into the mid-60s but we have big changes coming up over these next seven days. we are going to see more fog and low clouds gathering along the coastline. and that means some cooler temperatures on the way at least through thursday. then we are going to slowly start to warm up around the bay area. >> what is the coolest thing in the bay area? >> mobile weather lab. >> it is coming to a storm and coming to a school near you. that's the latest. back to you in the studio. >> smart kids. >> a special mission high up on a san jose city hall building.

a scientist actually rappelled down to the spot where a family of falcons has set up a nest. a biologist worked to determine the sex of several new chicks and to place bands around their legs. part of an effort to track the life-span of the birds to learn more about the health of the environment. there are a lot of falcons out there. up to 300 pairs in california. it's a lot. doesn't seem like it. top of the food chain. >> because the falcons are so high up on the food chain, their longevity is directly related to the health of what they eat. >> by the way, it turns out all of the newborn chicks on that ledge are males. all of them. >> there you go. >> i know. up next, speaking of eating, we are going to do a little dining with our fresh grocer tony tantillo. >> but first, is your meat safe? find out which meats doctors say are most likely to make you sick. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

university is making the transition to a smoke-free campus. southern california university is making the transition to a smoke-free campus. ucla went tobacco-free yesterday to coincide with earth day. it's the first university of california campus to ban tobacco products including cigarettes, pipes, cigars, chewing tobacco and even cigarettes. this is just the beginning. uc's president has called for all 10uc campuses to go tobacco-
